Weekend Warrior â Part 1 â âThe Bum Shoulderâ
Do you love playing sports? Do you participate in a masterâs league sport? Is it hard to make time to practice outside of games? Well, games are more fun anywayâ¦right?!
Of course! That is, if you donât have tendonitis or if you donât get injured. Right now, as Iâm writing this, there are 30 guys at my gym who are playing a weekend game of âpick-upâ basketball. And guess what? Without fail, every Saturday, one of them (at least) gets hurt, or leaves the game because âmy shoulder (knee, ankle, elbow) is killing me!â
While this is good for business, itâs not good for you. Itâs time that you learn how you can strengthen those painful joints in just a few minutes a day so that you donât have to worry about âold age catching up.â The fact is that we spend our whole day in a chair at work, or in front of a computer, or reading, or doing something else that has us in a terrible posture, slouched or hunched forward. Normally, when we leave work we crack our necks once or twice, wish for a massage, and then assume all is better the next day. Well, it turns out that we are actually doing slow, but successive damage to our joints.
Did you know that your head position can cause tendonitis in your shoulders? Itâs true. âForward head,â meaning your ear is not lined up with the top of your shoulder when you look from the side, actually puts stress on your rotator cuff. âForward shoulders,â as the name implies, creates a similar or greater stress on your rotator cuff muscles. This stress eventually leads to tendonitis, or sometimes even a rotator cuff tear that requires surgery.
By performing a couple of back strengthening and head retraction exercises, which you can do while sitting at work in less than 10 minutes, you can avoid, if not eliminate these problems. The muscles that youâre going to want to strengthen in your back are:
o Rhomboids
o Middle/Lower Trapezius (âTrapsâ)
o Posterior Deltoid
o Lattisimus Dorsi (âLatsâ)
So go out there and find some exercises to strengthen these muscles and avoid injury! If you are having trouble or you are unsure about what the best method might be, donât be too proud: Seek the help of a fitness professional or physical therapist. Weâd be happy to help you create a foundation for healthy living and injury prevention. The human body is a complicated machine. Itâs wise to avoid learning through experience when dealing with any complicated machine, especially one that hurts through experience!

Shoulder Pain: Arthritic Treatments
Help for shoulder pain
Shoulder arthritis is an affliction facing millions of Americans, but one treated very differently than similar situations in the knee and hip. We frequently hear about knee and hip replacement, but very rarely do doctors suggest that patients undergo a replacement of the shoulder. Primarily there is a lack of expertise that causes this, but it has also been cited that shoulder surgery has more risk involved.
However, this common assumption may require rethinking. A recent study by the Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopedics led by Doctor Edward McFarland, MD, director of the division of adult orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Hospital analyzed a series of hip replacement versus knee replacement versus shoulder replacement procedures. After looking at how the patients fared as a result of the surgery, researchers concluded that total shoulder replacement was just as safe and effective as other types of joint replacement.
However, the reality is that shoulder replacement is seen as drastically different than other types of joint replacement. According to a nationwide 2003 Medicare figure, 6700 people had shoulder joints replaced that year compared with 107,000 hip replacements and nearly 200,000 knee replacements. If it really is just as safe and effective, than arthritic shoulders have been dealt a terrible hand up to this point.
But even brighter news came from the study. Interestingly, patients in the study who had shoulder surgery had far fewer in hospital post-surgical complications compared to those who had their hips and knees replaced – complications that often include a risk of death. Additionally, researchers found the shoulder replacement surgery (also called arthroplasty) to be much less expensive compared to replacements of the knee and hip. Shoulder replacements total cost on average were just over $10,000 where hip replacement was $15,000 and knee replacement was nearly $15,000.
With everything that was revealed by the John Hopkins’ study, the instances of shoulder replacement surgery must increase in comparison to knee and hip replacement. Not only is such surgery cheaper, it is arguably more effective. 99% of people who have had shoulder replacement for arthritis notice pain relief and say they wish they would have done it sooner. With millions of Americans facing arthritis in the shoulder, such effective procedures must be more widely provided.
